THE DIGITAL SHIFT OF TAX AUTHORITIES
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Since June 16, 2025, the CRA has stopped sending business correspondence by mail. The following documents are now delivered online via My Business Account or Represent a Client:
- Notices of assessment or determination
- Letters, forms, and statements
- Requests for information
- Various routine tax notifications
An email notification will be sent by the CRA when new correspondence is added to My Business Account or when significant changes are made to the account.
This shift to electronic communication applies to:
- All businesses registered for My Business Account
- All businesses with an authorized representative who has online access
- All new registrations for CRA programs
Therefore, if you are represented by FBL S.E.N.C.R.L. or any other authorized representative with online access, you are automatically subject to this new policy.
However, the CRA provides certain exceptions for:
- Businesses without access to My Business Account and without an authorized representative with online access
- Charities, unless they opt for online correspondence
- Non-resident businesses without access to My Business Account and without an authorized representative with online access
In these cases, the CRA will continue to send correspondence by paper mail.
Actions to Take
- Log in to My Business Account
- Go to “Profile” → “Manage Notification Preferences”
- Follow the steps to add or update your email addresses
Attention! Without an up-to-date email address, you may not be notified of important CRA correspondence and deadlines, which could lead to non-compliance.
Individuals
For now, individuals continue to receive paper correspondence. However, the CRA encourages opening an online account to speed up communications and secure exchanges.
Revenu Québec (RQ)
Since August 2025, RQ has implemented similar measures for businesses.
Starting November 2025, a responsible person logging into My Account will have 90 days to accept the new terms of use, which include consent to receive communications electronically.
For more information, please contact your FBL representative.
